Pomsky Dog Characteristics and Temperament
This is the latest Pomsky breed information and temperament with the pictures. The Pomsky is not a purebred dog. It is a Hybrid deriving from the cross between the Husky and the Pomeranian. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.
Pomsky Temperament: Pomeranians are friendly, intelligent, playful, active, and extroverted. Huskies are also outgoing, playful, intelligent, and active. Huskies are also very alert and gentle. Some owners find that their Pomsky has a very strong Husky personality, while others see more of the Pomeranian temperament.
Pomsky Characteristics: The Pomsky is an intelligent, outgoing dog that loves to play. They are very active and enjoy time with the family and other animals. If properly socialized as puppies they are even good with cats. Pomskies are affectionate and love to snuggle once they have thoroughly tired themselves out. They are friendly toward strangers and especially good with children.
Pomsky Size: The Pomsky can come in a wide range of sizes. Since the goal is to downsize the Husky which can range from 35 to 60 lbs. We have decided to use 40 pounds as our starting weight because most breeders are using smaller Huskies to begin their programs. We have reduce it by 1/2 for Standard, 1/3 for Mini, and 1/4 for Toy. It is important that we maintain a good height weight ratio. Huskies range from 1.75 to 2.5 pounds per inch of height. However as we downsize it may be more appropriate to go to a 1.25 to 1.5 pounds per inch ratio. This would mean a 10 pound Pomsky would be 8″ tall. Likewise a 20 pound Pomsky would be 16″ tall. Calculated at the 1.25 rate. Ultimately we want our Pomskies to be medium boned dogs with good substance.
Standard : 16 to 20 lbs
Mini : 11 to 15 lbs
Toy : less than 10 pounds
Pomsky Coat: The Pomsky has a double coat with the undercoat being soft dense fur and the outer coat being soft and medium in length. The coat should never be so long as to obsure the structural appearance of the dogs.
Pomsky Care: The Pomsky is an athletic dog that will need some daily exercise. Due to his size this should be easily accomplished by playing with him in the home or yard. The Pomsky will also benefit from regular walks however extensive exercise is not necessary. Pomskies will benefit from weekly or biweekly brushing due to their thick coat. They tend to groom themselves much like a Husky so there is no need to regularly bath them. However a bath every month or two would be ok.
